Godfrey Deeny

A part of me misses Elsa Klensch, a part of me is thrilled when I see Suzy Menkes' flip. A big part of me misses Tim Blanks. Ive developed a healthy dislike of the new Fashion File. It s real choppy, there s no coherence or much information about a designer, a show. Tim was concise and literate and at least I still have his reviews on men.style.com. Watching Fashion Television on Saturday afternoons was a part of my teenage years like renting movies at Video 99 on Saturday nights (3 for $5.99) or playing tennis at the community centre. Seeing it again after a few years hiatus, it s skidded downhill. Was the show always that much fluff? Was Jeanie Becker always so fawning (wait, actually she was)? She was never Tim Blanks in her analysis. But seeing her interview Hussein Chalayan on his F/W 07 collection featuring mechanized dresses that magically/electronically peeled themselves off the models was painful. Here s one of the most brilliant designers of his generation who has real ideas and he s talking about "the body" in that academic way and Jeanie is just nodding and smiling with no follow up. At least I got to see Godfrey Deeny who loved the collection (who opined that the presentation and the cut of the clothes were all fresh and new) and seemed to be humouring Jeanie.

Godfrey Deeny is perfect.

Good morning and good night.
