Hair's obviously a important consideration for many people and, most espcially, for people of colour. Read some Melissa Harris Lacewell or Nell Painter. Watch Beauty Shop or Hair Show. From a Asian person's perspective, though, it's like this: You cut it wrong and you ll look like a immigrant and good luck crossing the border or getting people to talk to you like you know English. (Cause I do. Most of it.) On the other hand, you shave it all off and it ll give white people jus one more excuse to think you all look alike. Yes, white people need to learn and at the same time, why invite that much more racism into your day, you know? Also, if you shave it off, as a man, people ll think youre trying to pretend youre not going bald. And Im not goin bald. If I was, Id own my shit. I always do. And as someone doing their PhD, if you shave it, people ll think youre tying to get all Foucault and shit. Im not into that and it s not bout other people...Im just sayin...(notice how I said "Foucault and shit" rather than "Foucaultian" or "Foucauldian." It's cause I dont know. I love how some people use "Foucaultian" and some use 'Foucauldian" and pronounce it as such-- "Fu-koh-shian" and "Fu-col-dian"-- and pretend there's no difference and dont correct each other. It's not about being polite as it is about 1, academics themselves not knowing and, 2, academics digging their heels in and passive-aggressively maintaining their way is the way to say it. To the best of my knowledge, there's never been a definitive way to say it. The MLA needs to get on it.)
